ISLAMABAD: Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Islamabad on Monday on an official visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation, to hold talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussing regional security.
Upon his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, Momeni was received by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam were also present to welcome the visiting dignitary.
Welcoming the Iranian minister, Naqvi expressed confidence that the visit would further enhance ties between the two neighbouring countries and contribute to discussions on matters of mutual interest, including regional security, border management and economic cooperation.
Momeni thanked the Pakistani government for its warm reception and described Pakistan-Iran relations as longstanding and cordial, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Islamabad.
During his visit, the Iranian minister is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to discuss bilateral relations, border security and the evolving regional situation.
The Iranian delegation includes senior officials from various ministries and departments, including representatives responsible for border affairs, transport, urban development, energy and agriculture. Discussions are also expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, transit, border management and agricultural development, with both countries aiming to further increase bilateral trade.
According to Iranian officials, the visit is taking place at the invitation of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and is intended to strengthen institutional cooperation while advancing joint efforts to improve security along the shared border.
The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military exchanges involving Iran and the United States. While regional developments are expected to feature in the talks, Pakistani and Iranian officials are also expected to explore ways to enhance diplomatic engagement and promote regional stability.
Following the conclusion of his engagements in Pakistan, Momeni is expected to travel to New Delhi, India, to attend the BRICS Meeting of Ministers for Disaster Management at the invitation of his Indian counterpart.
Pakistan and Iran share a long border and maintain close cooperation on security, trade, energy and regional connectivity. Officials from both countries have repeatedly emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue and coordinated efforts to address common challenges while expanding economic and diplomatic ties.
