ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ayin Pakistan (TTAP), the PTI-led opposition alliance, announced on Friday that it will launch a nationwide protest movement starting August 5, comprising public meetings, rallies, strikes and outreach campaigns across the country over what it called a deteriorating political and security situation.

The date holds symbolic weight for the alliance — it marks three years since the conviction of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Demands and Declaration

Following a consultative meeting a day earlier, TTAP issued a formal declaration outlining its core demands:

  • The immediate resignation of the Balochistan government, which the alliance holds responsible for the province’s deteriorating law and order situation
  • A joint session of parliament to discuss terrorism and the security situations in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)
  • Postponement of the upcoming AJK elections until meaningful dialogue among stakeholders can take place
  • The immediate release of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other political prisoners — including Dr Mahrang Baloch, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Mahmoodur Rashid, Hassan Niazi, Imaan Mazari, and Ali Wazir

The alliance also voiced concern over the ongoing trial of Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, calling it a case of political victimisation targeting the former premier’s family.

Press Conference

The announcement was made at a joint press conference attended by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, TTAP Vice Chairman Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Balochistan National Party-Mengal chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal, and other senior alliance figures.

Achakzai, who heads TTAP, told reporters that the alliance was giving priority to the Balochistan crisis in light of recent violence in the province, while stressing that the situation in AJK would not be sidelined either.

He pointed to a recent attack near Ziarat, alleging that police personnel had been sent into the field without adequate ammunition and that no official had since been held accountable for the failure.

Khokhar said the alliance’s demands were the product of extensive internal consultation, and that immediate political engagement was necessary to stop conditions in Balochistan and AJK from worsening further. He confirmed the alliance’s support for delaying the AJK elections and called on the government to settle the matter through dialogue rather than confrontation.

Separately, senator Raja Nasir Abbas questioned who would be held accountable for the deaths of civilians and police personnel in recent violence, framing the losses as evidence of the state’s failure to protect its citizens.

Achakzai also argued that an unelected government lacked the moral and political standing needed to address Balochistan’s deeper administrative and security problems.

Origins of the August 5 Plan

According to TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Syed, the idea for an August 5 launch date came from PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who proposed it during the alliance’s consultative meeting a day before the press conference. Hussain said organisers were still weighing whether to hold simultaneous events in multiple cities or concentrate efforts around a single large gathering, with a final schedule to follow further consultation among the alliance’s constituent parties.

Asked whether TTAP intended to act before the August 5 launch, Hussain said Achakzai and other leaders planned to travel to Balochistan to meet with protesters and assess ground conditions firsthand. He added that the alliance would also make a fresh attempt to visit AJK, after an earlier trip by its leaders was blocked.

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said his party was “exactly on the same page” as TTAP on both the protest movement and its underlying demands.

The AJK Election Contradiction

Akram was pressed on an apparent inconsistency in the alliance’s position: TTAP is calling for the AJK elections to be postponed, yet polling remains scheduled for July 27 — weeks before the nationwide movement is even set to begin on August 5. Asked what PTI and TTAP would do if the vote goes ahead as planned, Akram said the party had already opted out entirely. “We have boycotted the elections. We are not taking part in these elections,” he said, adding that TTAP would determine its next steps once it becomes clear whether the polls proceed on schedule.
