Jerusalem / Washington, Oct. 20, 2025

President Donald Trump said Sunday that the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains in effect despite a wave of Israeli strikes on Gaza following what Israel described as an attack on its troops. Trump suggested the latest violence may have been carried out by rogue elements rather than Hamas leadership and said Washington would press for the truce to hold.

Ceasefire, strikes and casualties

Israeli forces launched strikes in Gaza after accusing militants of attacking Israeli troops in Rafah — the most serious flare-up since the nine-day truce began — and then said it had resumed enforcing the ceasefire. Gaza’s civil defense agency, which operates under local authorities, reported dozens of deaths in the strikes, while Israeli officials said they were investigating the reports of civilian casualties.

Trump’s remarks

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump affirmed the truce was “still in place,” adding that the recent incident appeared to involve “some rebels within” rather than being an action ordered by Hamas leaders. The president said any violations would be addressed “toughly but properly.”

U.S. envoys on the ground

Trump’s special envoys, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, returned to Israel this week to reinforce the deal and urge all parties to maintain the ceasefire and expand humanitarian access. Kushner told CBS News that if Israel seeks closer regional integration after the war, it must also find ways to help Palestinians “thrive” economically — a point he called central to long-term stability.

Outlook

Diplomats warn the ceasefire remains fragile. Key issues such as hostage exchanges, reconstruction, and guarantees over militant activity are expected to dominate talks between Israeli officials and U.S. envoys. International aid groups continue to call for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza.
