Trump Announces 35% Tariff on Canadian Exports Starting August 1 Amid Renewed Trade Tensions

0

WASHINGTON/OTTAWA — July 10, 2025
U.S. President Donald Trump has informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of a forthcoming 35% tariff on Canadian exports to the United States, set to take effect on August 1, in what appears to be a renewed push in Trump’s ongoing global trade offensive.

The announcement came via a formal letter delivered Thursday — one of more than 20 similar notices the White House has issued to trade partners since the start of the week, signaling a sweeping escalation in protectionist measures.

Canada, Mexico Rush to Preserve USMCA

Canada and Mexico had been aiming to finalize updated trade terms with Washington by July 21, hoping to maintain the stability of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) — the trilateral pact that replaced NAFTA in 2020. However, Trump’s latest move appears to have pushed the negotiation timeline back.

“We remain firm in our commitment to defending Canadian workers and industries throughout this process,” Prime Minister Carney said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding that Canada is now working toward a revised deadline of August 1 to reach a deal.

Tariffs and Tensions

The Trump administration has reintroduced broad tariffs, citing concerns ranging from trade imbalances to border security and drug trafficking. Under earlier rounds of tariffs, Canadian and Mexican exports — including industrial goods and energy products — had faced levies of up to 25%, though exemptions were eventually granted under the USMCA framework.

Despite a recent thaw in relations, including face-to-face meetings between Carney and Trump in Washington (May 6) and again at the G7 Summit in Canada, tensions have returned following Canada’s decision to suspend certain taxes affecting U.S. tech companies — a move that briefly stalled trade negotiations.

Global Impact: More Tariff Letters Incoming

Beyond North America, Trump confirmed in a televised NBC interview that he is contemplating additional blanket tariffs — ranging from 15% to 20% — against countries not yet included in his recent trade warnings. He said letters to other nations, including the European Union, were imminent.

In the case of Brazil, which faces tariffs of up to 50%, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signaled openness to dialogue but noted that reciprocity measures are under consideration. Trump’s letter to Lula also contained criticism of Brazil’s handling of former president Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing figure closely aligned with Trump during his previous term.

Looking Ahead

As the August 1 deadline approaches, pressure is mounting on Washington’s trading partners to either negotiate terms or brace for a wave of tariffs. With Trump pursuing what he calls a strategy of “fair and reciprocal trade,” allies and rivals alike are reassessing their economic ties to the United States.
