Karachi: The 9th of Muharram-ul-Haram was observed across Karachi with solemn religious devotion as thousands of mourners gathered to commemorate the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
The city’s central 9th Muharram procession, held in remembrance of Hazrat Abbas Alamdar, commenced from Nishtar Park after a majlis addressed by Allama Shahnshah Hussain Naqvi, widely known as Khatib-e-Pakistan. In his address, he reflected on the life, character, and enduring legacy of Imam Hussain (RA), emphasizing that the sacrifices made in Karbala for the preservation of faith continue to inspire generations.
Following the congregation, the procession proceeded under the leadership of Pak Haidri Scouts, moving along Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road before reaching M.A. Jinnah Road at Numaish Chowrangi and continuing toward its destination at Husainia Iraniyan Imambargah in Kharadar.
At Ali Raza Imambargah on M.A. Jinnah Road, mourners offered Zuhr and Asr prayers organized by the Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) Pakistan, with the prayers led by Maulana Sadiq Jafri of Majlis-e-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen. After the prayers, ISO members held a demonstration condemning the United States and Israel, during which their flags were set on fire. Speakers also addressed participants on the theme “Hussainiyat – Our Path.”
To facilitate mourners amid the large gatherings, organizers arranged water distribution points, towel stations, cooling sprays, and sabeels providing refreshments along the procession route.
Authorities implemented extensive security and traffic management measures throughout the city. More than 20,000 police personnel, including over 1,300 traffic officers, were deployed for Muharram 9 security duties, with thousands specifically assigned to safeguard the central procession. Reserve forces and snipers were also stationed along key points of the route.
To accommodate the procession, M.A. Jinnah Road remained closed to regular traffic from Gurumandir to Tower, while sections connecting Jamshed Road, Gurumandir, and Bahadur Yar Jang Road were also temporarily shut during the day. The traffic police announced alternative routes for commuters and urged residents to follow official advisories to minimize disruptions.
The observance concluded peacefully under heightened security, with religious ceremonies, mourning processions, and public service arrangements reflecting the significance of the day for participants across the city.
