A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing in Birmingham city centre that left a woman fighting for her life.

The attack took place on Smallbrook Queensway, close to the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday evening. Police say a woman in her 30s suffered a serious neck injury and remains in critical condition in hospital.

The suspect, named as Djeison Rafael, has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault, and possession of a knife. He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Detectives from West Midlands Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward. Officers said Rafael was believed to be wearing a grey tracksuit, a black hat, trainers, and carrying a rucksack at the time of the incident.

A section of Smallbrook Queensway, near the Bullring’s main entrance on New Street, was cordoned off on Saturday as forensic teams examined the area. A police tent was set up outside the shopping centre, and officers remained at the scene throughout the day.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police via their website or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
