No Rain in Thar: Drought Looms as Monsoon Skips Desert Region

Thar Desert faces a growing drought threat as monsoon rains fail to arrive. Residents brace for water scarcity, crop failure, and increased migration.

Tharparkar, Pakistan – July 23, 2025:
The vast Thar Desert region is facing an alarming dry spell this monsoon season, with no significant rainfall recorded across key areas including Mithi, Nagarparkar, Chachro, and Diplo. This lack of rain is triggering serious concerns among farmers, herders, and humanitarian organizations operating in the region.

Traditionally dependent on seasonal rains for agriculture and livestock, Thar’s local economy is under severe pressure. Crops are failing, water sources are drying up, and families are beginning to migrate to urban centers in search of relief.

Experts link the disruption in monsoon patterns to ongoing climate change, which is causing erratic weather across South Asia. Meteorological reports suggest that the monsoon system has weakened over the southeastern parts of Sindh province this year.

Local NGOs are calling for emergency measures, including water tankers, fodder distribution, and health camps, as cases of malnutrition and water-borne illnesses begin to surface.

If rains do not arrive in the next two weeks, the region may plunge into a full-blown humanitarian crisis.
