ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting its youth and strengthening national values, calling on the nation to draw inspiration from the timeless message of Karbala while renewing efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

In their separate messages issued on the occasions of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and Youm-e-Ashura, the country’s top leadership stressed that safeguarding young people from social evils and promoting the principles of truth, justice, sacrifice and moral courage remain national priorities.

President Zardari said Pakistan stands with the international community in addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, noting that this year’s theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” highlights the need for coordinated global action.

He warned that the emergence of new synthetic drugs, expanding trafficking networks and increasing accessibility of narcotics, particularly among young people, require innovative and collective responses.

On the occasion of Youm-e-Ashura, the president described the tragedy of Karbala as one of the most significant events in Islamic history. He said the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the Ahl-e-Bait and their loyal companions remains a timeless lesson in standing firm for truth, justice, integrity and human dignity.

He said Karbala teaches humanity that while every sacrifice can be made to uphold righteousness, one should never surrender to falsehood, tyranny and injustice.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called for a comprehensive national strategy to tackle the growing threat of drug abuse, emphasizing prevention, public awareness, rehabilitation and stronger law enforcement.

He expressed concern that criminal networks are increasingly exploiting modern communication technologies, social media platforms and digital payment systems, including cryptocurrencies, to facilitate illicit drug trade and target young people.

The prime minister warned that harmful substances are often portrayed online as fashionable or harmless, creating misleading narratives that place youth at greater risk.

On Youm-e-Ashura, Shehbaz Sharif said the day serves as a lasting reminder of faith, patience, sacrifice and social reform. He said the unparalleled sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his devoted companions gave Ashura a unique and everlasting place in Islamic history.

He noted that Karbala demonstrates that adherence to principles and moral values is the foundation of a dignified and civilized society. Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), he said, proved through his conduct that sacrificing for truth, justice and human dignity is far superior to submitting to oppression and falsehood.

Highlighting the broader lessons of Karbala, the prime minister said the historic event symbolizes efforts for the reform of the Muslim Ummah, the promotion of virtue and the rejection of wrongdoing.

Both leaders urged the nation, particularly the younger generation, to embrace the enduring values of Karbala while remaining united in confronting contemporary challenges such as drug abuse, illicit trafficking and other social evils to build a stronger, healthier and more responsible society.
