THATTA, Sindh – July 20: At least six people lost their lives and a dozen others sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned and plunged into a ditch near Makli, in Sindh’s Thatta district, early Sunday morning.
According to Edhi Rescue Service, the bus was en route from Karachi to Keenjhar Lake carrying a group of picnickers when the driver lost control while taking a sharp turn near the Thatta Bypass. The vehicle overturned and fell off the road, causing severe casualties.
“Rescue teams responded immediately and transported the injured to hospitals. The bodies of the six victims were initially moved to a mortuary in Orangi Town and later transferred to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth,” said a spokesperson from Edhi Foundation.
Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition and are receiving treatment at hospitals in Karachi.
Another Tragic Incident in Khairpur
In a separate road accident on the same day, one person was killed and multiple others — including women and children — were critically injured when a passenger coach overturned on the Gambat National Highway in Khairpur district.
As per reports from the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the bus was traveling from Karachi to Swabi when it overturned due to alleged over-speeding. Emergency responders and local police transported the injured to nearby medical facilities.
CM Sindh Issues Directives
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over both incidents.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and have directed the Thatta and Khairpur deputy commissioners to ensure the provision of immediate medical aid and full cooperation,” CM Murad said in a statement through his spokesperson Abdul Rashid Channa.
He also urged citizens to drive responsibly and adhere to traffic rules to safeguard lives.
A Deadly Pattern on Pakistan’s Roads
These incidents add to a growing list of road accidents in Sindh:
- July 15: A trailer-truck collision near Karachi’s New Sabzi Mandi killed one and injured three.
- Early July: Four members of a family were killed and six injured when their car crashed on Hawkes’ Bay Road in Karachi.
- June 19: A dumper truck overturned on Rashid Minhas Road, killing a woman and a 5-year-old girl.
- June 11: Multiple fatalities reported in separate crashes in North Nazimabad and on the Super Highway.
Authorities cite reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, speeding, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws as primary causes behind such tragic events.
