KARACHI: August 18, 2025 — Sindh Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani said on Monday that emergency measures were in place as Karachi and other parts of the province prepared for a fresh spell of monsoon rains.

Light showers were reported in several parts of Karachi, including Surjani Town, Gulshan-i-Maymar, Korangi, and Faisal airbase, with trace amounts in other areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of widespread rain and thunderstorms across Sindh until August 22, with the possibility of heavy downpours and urban flooding in vulnerable localities.

Speaking at a press conference, Ghani acknowledged the potential severity of the rains, especially in Karachi, and assured that provincial and local councils had been instructed to mobilize resources in advance. He said arrangements had been made to address chronic problem areas to minimize disruption.

“Whatever is possible at the government and institutional level, we have done it. The chief minister has also issued clear directions to ensure preparedness,” Ghani said.

The PMD has forecast rainfall for Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Badin, Thatta, Mirpurkhas, and several other districts. Officials warned of possible flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to daily life in low-lying and densely populated areas.

Ghani urged citizens and political groups to show solidarity during the expected rains. “This is the time to help each other. Criticism can wait — right now, the focus should be on relief efforts,” he added.

Last month, heavy rains in Sindh claimed at least six lives in incidents of electrocution, drowning, and roof collapses. Authorities are urging residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers.
